How EPT Pregnancy Tests Work
EPT tests use a lateral flow immunoassay to detect human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in urine. When hCG binds to the test antibodies, a blue-colored line appears in the result window. EPT's standard test has a detection sensitivity of approximately 25 mIU/mL.
EPT offers both traditional line tests and a digital version. The digital version displays 'PREGNANT' or 'NOT PREGNANT' and removes the guesswork from line interpretation entirely.
Understanding Faint Blue Lines on EPT
A faint blue line on an EPT test within the reading window (up to 10 minutes) is a positive result. hCG has been detected at a low concentration - this is typical in very early pregnancy.
Blue dye tests like EPT are more prone to ambiguous evaporation lines than pink dye tests. A very faint gray or pale mark that appears after the reading window has closed is most likely an evaporation line. Always read the test at the time specified on the packaging.

EPT and Evaporation Lines
Like all blue dye tests, EPT tests can produce evaporation marks as urine dries on the strip. These typically appear after the reading window and are colorless or pale gray rather than blue.
To minimize confusion, photograph your EPT test within the reading window using the ClearLine app for an objective analysis. Discard the test after the window closes to avoid misreading an evaporation line as a positive.
EPT Digital vs. Line Tests
If you are uncertain about a faint line on an EPT line test, the EPT Digital test offers a clear word result. The digital display eliminates the need to judge line color or intensity. However, the digital test requires approximately 25 mIU/mL - the same sensitivity as the line version.
For earlier detection, consider supplementing with a First Response Early Result test, which has a sensitivity of ~6.3 mIU/mL.
- Read line tests within the specified window - never after
- Blue dye: look for actual blue color, not gray or colorless marks
- Use EPT Digital to eliminate line interpretation entirely
- Photograph the test immediately with ClearLine for objective analysis
- Retest in 48 hours to confirm a faint positive is darkening
